Biography

Born 1955 in Stuttgart, studied literature, theatre studies, musicology and business administration at the University of Munich. Subsequently assistant stage director in Strasbourg, Stuttgart, Geneva, Brussels and Freiburg. 1982 first personal responsibility for stagings of Cavalli’s “L’Ormindo” and Strauss’ “Ariadne auf Naxos” in Freiburg. 1987-1991 first principal staff producer at the Opera in Bremen. Besides other stagings there and at other opera houses, earned doctorate for “The Opera in the 17th and early 18th centuries on the contemporary stage”. 1991-1997 senior director at the Pfalztheater Kaiserslautern. 1995 and 1996 entries in Opernwelt’s critics survey in the category, Opera House of the Year, for his “well thought out and convincing repertory planning” in Kaiserslautern. Guest director et al. in Heidelberg, Würzburg, Braunschweig, Osnabrück, Bremen, Dortmund, Magdeburg, St. Gallen and Stockholm. Two entries in the category, Stage Director of the Year, in the Opernwelt survey 1997 for his “Xerxes” staging for the Halle Handel Festival Opening. 1997 – 1999 senior director and director of the Handel Festival at the Staatstheater Karlsruhe. 1999-2007 General Director of Theater Augsburg. 2007-12 General Director of the Staatstheater am Gärtnerplatz in Munich. From 2012 on General Director of the Theater Münster.
